Marketing analytics tools, compared on what actually separates them

A marketing analytics tool earns its cost the moment it can tell you which channel produced customers rather than clicks. That is a higher bar than it sounds: it requires the tool to hold the person from first touch through to revenue, across sessions and devices, for longer than the sales cycle.

What separates a good one from a bad one

Revenue per channel, not clicks per channel
Traffic reports rank by volume. The channel that sends a third of the traffic can produce more revenue, and only a revenue view shows it.
Cohort retention by acquisition source
Two channels with identical conversion rates can differ completely in who stays. This is the number that changes budget decisions.
Campaign-level granularity
Channel is too coarse to act on. You buy campaigns, so the report has to reach campaign.
How the data gets in
Whether you need a data team, a CDP and a warehouse before the first report, or whether the tool captures it itself.

How to decide

The test is whether the tool can rank your channels by revenue instead of by traffic, using data it captured itself, before the end of a trial. If it needs a warehouse, a CDP and a data engineer before that first ranking, it is a BI project wearing an analytics label; budget for it accordingly or pick a tool that captures its own events.

The last column is the honest one: when each tool, including ours, is the right choice. Where a full head-to-head exists, the name links to it.

Where KISSmetrics fits

KISSmetrics reports revenue by campaign and retention by acquisition source out of autocaptured data, without a warehouse in front of it. It is not a BI tool: if you need to blend finance, support and product data into custom models, you want a warehouse and Looker or Tableau on top.

Questions

What should a marketing analytics tool measure?
At minimum: revenue by campaign, conversion rate by step, and retention by acquisition source. Traffic and rankings are inputs, not outcomes. If the tool cannot connect a campaign to money, it is a reporting layer rather than an analytics one.
Do I need a CDP as well as marketing analytics?
Only if you are routing data to many destinations. A CDP is plumbing, not analysis; it moves events between systems. If your need is answering questions rather than syncing tools, analytics alone is usually enough and considerably cheaper.
How do I measure the true value of a marketing channel?
Follow the people it acquired to revenue over time, rather than counting conversions at the moment of the click. A channel with a lower conversion rate and better retention frequently wins on lifetime value, and click-level reporting will never show it.
