What Mixpanel pricing actually does
Mixpanel prices on events: every tracked action is a unit on a meter, and the meter is the bill. That model is fair and legible at small volume, and its consequences only show up later, because event volume grows with your traffic whether or not the new events carry new information. Understanding the meter is understanding the price.
The model
- The meter is events
- Each tracked action counts once. Pageviews, clicks, custom events, everything on the meter equally, whether or not anyone ever queries it.
- The free tier is real but bounded
- A generous monthly event allowance with core reports. The bound to check is not only volume: some capabilities and history depths belong to paid tiers, so verify the specific reports your team needs are in the tier you are on.
- Paid tiers price the same meter higher
- Moving up buys volume, longer data history and governance features. The unit economics per event fall with commitment, which is why the sales motion pushes annual plans.
Where the bill jumps
Not list prices, which change; the mechanisms that move them, which do not.
Traffic growth: the meter tracks your success. A marketing win can move you a tier without any new analytical need.
Instrumentation enthusiasm: every new tracked event is recurring cost. Teams end up rationing what they track, which quietly degrades the dataset.
History and governance: longer lookbacks and data-governance tooling live in higher tiers, so the features you need most at scale arrive priced for scale.
Ask before signing
- What happens in the month we exceed the event allowance: overage billing, hard stop, or forced upgrade?
- Which of the reports we rely on are gated above our tier, and what is the history window at our tier?
- What does the renewal look like if our event volume doubles? Ask for the number in writing.
- Can we exclude high-volume low-value events from the meter, and who does that work?
Ours, for the record: one meter, public prices
Free to 100,000 events a month with nothing gated. Growth is $99/month for 500,000 events, Silver $299/month for 2 million. The whole ladder is on the pricing page, which is the point.
Questions
- Is Mixpanel free tier enough for a small team?
- Often yes at the start: the event allowance is genuinely large. The constraint that bites first is usually not volume but capability and history depth on the free tier. Check the specific reports you need and the lookback they allow before building your workflow on it.
- How does KISSmetrics pricing compare?
- Same meter, different philosophy on gating: free to 100,000 events a month with every feature unlocked, then Growth at $99/month for 500,000 events and Silver at $299/month for 2 million. Nothing is feature-gated on any tier, so growing volume is the only reason a bill changes.
- What makes an event bill grow faster than traffic?
- Instrumentation. Autocaptured clicks, scroll events and per-field form telemetry can multiply events per visit several times over. Whatever tool you choose, audit which events actually feed a report someone reads; the rest are metered noise.
