What Hotjar pricing actually does

Hotjar prices on daily sessions: how much of your traffic it is allowed to look at. That is the honest meter for a sampling tool, and it produces the honest problem: the bill scales with your traffic while the value scales with how many recordings a human actually watches. The gap between those two curves is the thing to price before any tier list matters.

The model

The meter is daily sessions
Tiers are defined by sessions per day the tool captures. Above your tier, sessions are sampled or dropped rather than billed as overage.
Free is a real tier
A small daily session allowance with core heatmaps and recordings, enough to evaluate honestly on a low-traffic site and permanently useful for very small ones.
Products bundle by tier
Heatmaps, recordings, feedback and interview tools arrive progressively; the observation and the research halves are priced as one ladder.

Where the bill jumps

Not list prices, which change; the mechanisms that move them, which do not.

Traffic growth moves the tier even when the team watches the same twenty recordings a week it always did.

Multi-site setups: each property needs coverage, and the meters do not pool gracefully.

The research tools: interviews and feedback at team scale sit in the upper tiers, so the qualitative programme matures into the expensive end of the ladder.

Ask before signing

  • How many recordings did anyone on the team actually watch last month? Divide the quote by that number.
  • What sampling happens above our tier’s daily sessions, and is it random or biased toward early-day traffic?
  • Do we need capture on every page, or would recording only checkout and signup cut the required tier?

Ours, for the record: one meter, public prices

Free to 100,000 events a month with nothing gated. Growth is $99/month for 500,000 events, Silver $299/month for 2 million. The whole ladder is on the pricing page, which is the point.

Questions

Is there a free alternative to Hotjar?
Microsoft Clarity covers recordings and heatmaps free at any volume, and is the standard answer for pure observation. The Hotjar features it does not replace are the research ones: surveys, feedback widgets and interviews.
How does KISSmetrics pricing compare?
Different jobs, so a direct price comparison misleads: Hotjar prices watching sessions, KISSmetrics prices measuring people (free to 100k events a month, then $99). The comparison that matters is per decision: qualitative tools price per look, analytics prices per answer. Many teams run Clarity free for looking and put the budget into measurement.
Why does my recordings bill keep rising when usage does not?
Because the meter is your traffic, not your usage. A sampling tool priced on sessions bills your growth even when the team’s watching habits are flat. Capping capture to key pages realigns the meter with the value.
