What Heap pricing actually does
Heap prices on sessions, quoted rather than listed, and since the Contentsquare acquisition the motion has moved further enterprise-ward. The structural thing to understand is what autocapture does to any volume meter: a tool that records everything by default generates the volume it then bills you for. That is not sharp practice, it is physics; it just needs pricing in.
The model
- The meter is sessions, quoted
- Paid tiers are sized on annual session volume and negotiated, not listed. Budgeting starts with your traffic, not with a rate card.
- Autocapture feeds the meter
- Recording every click and pageview is the product’s core promise, and every recorded interaction is volume on the account. The capture breadth you bought is also the bill you bought.
- The free tier is small and real
- A capped monthly session allowance with core analysis, suitable for evaluation and small sites, with history limits that push growing teams upward.
Where the bill jumps
Not list prices, which change; the mechanisms that move them, which do not.
Traffic growth bills directly: sessions are your visits, so the meter is your marketing performance.
The enterprise threshold: crossing from self-serve into quoted contracts changes the negotiation, the term length and the exit cost at once.
Retention needs: longer history and governance sit in the upper contract tiers, arriving exactly when your accumulated data makes leaving harder.
Ask before signing
- What is a session in the contract: how do SPAs, background tabs and bot filtering affect the count?
- What is the overage mechanism in a spike month: bill, sample, or stop?
- How much history transfers out at exit, in what format, and at what cost? Autocapture datasets are the heaviest to move.
Ours, for the record: one meter, public prices
Free to 100,000 events a month with nothing gated. Growth is $99/month for 500,000 events, Silver $299/month for 2 million. The whole ladder is on the pricing page, which is the point.
Questions
- Does Heap still have a free plan?
- Yes, session-capped with core features, and it remains a fair way to evaluate autocapture on a small site. The limits on volume and history are designed to be outgrown; treat it as the trial it is.
- How does KISSmetrics pricing compare?
- Also autocapture, but metered on events with public prices: free to 100,000 events a month with everything unlocked, then $99/month for 500,000. The AI configuration assigns meaning to captured events at setup, which also means you can prune what you do not need instead of paying to store everything forever.
- Does autocapture always cost more than manual tracking?
- It records more, so on any volume meter it bills more per visitor than a curated plan does. What it saves is engineering time and the cost of the events you forgot to track. The honest comparison is total cost: meter plus the salary hours a tracking plan consumes.
